eCabinet: Government-wide XML Collaboration Becomes a Reality in Ireland

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Saint Petersburg, Florida. – February 18, 2005 – In.vision Research Corporation, the market leader for XML authoring in the Microsoft Office System, today announced the formal launch of phase two of the eCabinet project by the Irish Government. The following is the formal statement issued by the Irish Government concerning the tremendous success of the project, which had its initial launch just last July:

Statement By Tom Kitt TD, Government Chief Whip. 17th February 2005

The Information Society Minister Tom Kitt today welcomed the arrival of the eCabinet at Government meetings. The Minister commented on the success of the system since it was deployed to all Government Departments last July. Speaking at the launch the Minister said, "I am very pleased that the eCabinet model has been very successful in practice, and I am sure other Ministers will agree that the benefits in terms of efficiency and effectiveness are very apparent even at this early stage. Once again the Government has proved that we are to the forefront in utilizing advanced technology and consider the eCabinet project a showcase for innovation at the heart of Government."

eCabinet is now in use in all Government Ministers' offices and throughout Government Departments, it is custom designed & built, with In.vision Research Corporation as development partner. The new eCabinet system makes all of the necessary information available at the touch of a screen. It has eliminated the need for manual distribution of paper across 15 Government Departments.

Commenting at the launch today Minister Kitt said, "Not only do I and my colleagues at Cabinet get our information much faster – we now get it presented in a much better way. A look at one screen is usually enough to comprehend the essence of the issue. More detailed information is then just a screen touch or two away."

"Another benefit is we need a lot less paper. Gone are the days of needing to bring up to 5 kilos of paper to a Cabinet meeting. Today very little paper is brought – and for those who want to – eCabinet facilitates completely paperless meetings."

Minister Kitt said that eCabinet was also significant for a number of other reasons:

  • It joins up Government departments in a way not previously achieved, despite the different systems in use across departments.

  • It’s a good example of civil service embracing public service modernisation.

  • eCabinet now places Ireland at the forefront internationally. It is the first of its kind worldwide and what it delivers is truly innovative.

"In the same way people view the Government's introduction of the smoking ban last year as a major advancement, I believe that in years to come other countries will look to Ireland for direction on technological advancement at a Government level. eCabinet now places Ireland at the forefront internationally. It is the first of its kind worldwide and what it delivers is truly innovative."

The Minister concluded, "Having been closely involved with this project, and seeing what has been achieved here in information management, I can only encourage others – whether organizations or companies - to realize and utilize the full benefits of technology, not just for the effectiveness and efficiencies of their own business, but for our environment."
